My name is Angela Ortiz and I have been baking since I was a young girl in my late grandmother's kitchen. I started dabbling in cake decorating by the time I was in the seventh grade as a self-taught cake decorator. I learned the very basics in cake decorating by studying books and pictures. I baked and decorated for family during holidays and birthdays. By the time I graduated high school I had stopped baking and decorating to concentrate on my studies and to play sports. Once in college, I worked hard to complete my degree in zoology and chemistry and graduated in 2003. It was not until 2006 when I decided I wanted to take the leap and invest in some basic classes doing one of many things I loved doing as a kid. I refined my skill in cake decorating and again started baking and decorating for not only family this time, but friends, friends of friends, co-workers and friends of co-workers all while holding down a full time job as a veterinary tech/assistant. I am also busy being a Mommy to my awesome son.
As of December 2020, I have decided leave my job of 10 years working as a veterinary assistant at a zoo to devote more time to family and my caking and baking. I have taken the leap to doing this full time.
I find myself using math and chemistry formulas when figuring out new recipes. I am fortunate to have been able to combine my creative side with my math and science background when baking and creating a cake.
We are for the most part a two person operation with the help of my mother. She is constantly learning the craft. Surprisingly, she was not a baker or decorator until I wrangled her into the world of cake. She currently helps with baking ,fondant work, and most of the time she is responsible for the making of frosting. Aside from assisting me she loves to sew and is my son's caregiver when I have needed her.
I have a hunger to learn new techniques and try new challenges. I go to great lengths to make every cake the very best it can be. Much hard work, sweat and, yes, sometimes tears goes into your cake creation (figuratively speaking about the sweat and tears in cake, LOL!). I have always considered myself a cake decorator and nothing else. It wasn't until the day I was complimented by one of my clients who called me a "true artist", I'm guessing that makes me a "cake artist" now!
It has been a rough road to get to where I ultimately want be, but this girl knows that this is just a wonderful journey with cake. I cant wait to see what lies ahead and what door opens next. So come along for the ride. I'm ready to take on your order!
